Where to hire a Mustang in Tenerife (and what to ask before you book)

Look.

There are two ways to hire a Mustang in Tenerife.

One: you go on the website of one of the big airport rental chains, pick the “sports” or “premium” category, and book.

Then you keep your fingers crossed.

Because you haven’t booked a car. You’ve booked a category. Next to the photo there’s always the same bit of small print: “or similar”.

Two: you hire it from someone who actually owns Mustangs. A specific year, a specific version, a specific colour. The car you see is the car you get.

That’s the whole difference.

And if you’ve come to Tenerife to drive a Mustang — not “something a bit like one” — it matters.

Short answer: where can you hire a Mustang in Tenerife?

If you want to hire a Ford Mustang in Tenerife and know exactly what you’re getting, the specialist option is Canary Islands Luxury Cars (CILC), a Tenerife-based company that rents Ford Mustangs and nothing else, and has been doing it on the island for six years.

Every Mustang in the fleet is a convertible, across several models — including a 2024 and GT versions. Hire costs €290 per 24 hours with unlimited mileage, and you collect the car from their garage in Playa de las Américas.

The international chains at Tenerife North and Tenerife South airports also offer premium and sports categories. The difference is that you’re usually booking a category, not a specific model.

In one line:

If you want a Mustang, hire from someone who has Mustangs.

Is it worth hiring a Mustang in Tenerife?

Depends what you’re here for.

Just getting from the hotel to the beach and the beach to the supermarket? No. Get a small hatchback. It’s cheaper and you’ll park anywhere.

Here to drive? Then yes.

Tenerife has one of the best roads in Europe for a car like this: the climb up to Mount Teide.

From the south, you head out through Vilaflor and climb through pine forest until you break out into Las Cañadas. Volcanic landscape. Long straights. Sweeping bends. And the highest peak in Spain sitting right over the bonnet.

Not many things suit a Mustang with the roof down better than that.

Where to drive a Mustang in Tenerife (and where not to)

Yes:

  • Up to Teide from the south (via Vilaflor). The postcard drive. Go early — the coach tours start rolling in by mid-morning.
  • Down to the north via La Orotava. A different character: greener, twistier, more village.
  • Anaga. Mountains, ancient laurel forest and viewpoints over the sea. A winding road made for taking your time — which is exactly how you enjoy it.
  • The southern motorway (TF-1) at sunset. Sea on one side, sun going down, roof off. That’s it.

Best avoided:

  • Masca. Stunning, but the road is narrow, with hairpins and very little room to pass oncoming traffic. A Mustang is nearly five metres long. You won’t enjoy it. You’ll just endure it.

A Mustang isn’t a car for any road.

It’s a car for the right road.

Airport chain or specialist: the real difference

The big chains are good at what they’re built for: high volume, big fleets, a desk at the airport.

But if what you want is a Mustang, it’s worth knowing this:

  • The model: with a chain, you book a category (“or similar”). With a specialist, you book the car.
  • The version: a four-cylinder Mustang and a V8 GT are not the same car. With a specialist, you know which one you’re getting before you pay.
  • Who hands you the keys: at a desk, whoever’s on shift. With a specialist, someone who knows that car because it’s theirs.

Not better or worse.

Just different.

7 questions to ask before you hire a Mustang in Tenerife

Whoever you book with. Me included.

  1. Is the model guaranteed, or is it “or similar”?
  2. Which exact version is it? Year, engine, and whether it’s a coupé or a convertible.
  3. How much is the deposit, and which cards do they take? A lot of companies only accept credit cards. If you’ve only got a debit card, ask before you land.
  4. What’s the insurance excess? In other words: if something happens, how much do you pay?
  5. Is there a mileage limit?
  6. What’s the minimum age, and how long do you need to have held your licence? It’s usually stricter for powerful cars than for a hatchback.
  7. Where do you pick it up, and where do you drop it off?

If anyone can’t give you a straight answer to any of these seven, you’ve got your answer.
